DAVIDS MADE ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE IN WALVIS BAY
SHAROLDINE BOCK
Tv presenter and music artist Johnny Davids made his first official performance of Openbaring
and Griekwa Psalms, in Walvis Bay, on 12 November with pastor Timothy Feder and his band.
This is David's first performance in Walvis Bay after 2018 when he launched his solo album
called Cornerstone.
Openbaring and Griekwa Psalms is a new project, with a new sound for gospel music, says
Davids.
“There are many controversies around the book (Revelation)in the bible, many people perceive
it differently and it also depends on the congregation you are in…” added Davids.
He noted that he performed Griekwa Psalms as a tribute production to Randal Wicomb, who
composed it.
“It was what Randal Wicomb did, and I did it as Johnny Davids, because there is not much done
in respect of Randal,” he said. He added that most people would rather pay tribute to other artists.
“He (Wicomb) has a phenominal story. The fact that in the apartheid era, they were classified as
white to exploit from apartheid South Africa even though he was coloured. This made his family
split in two, that’s why you would see the coloured side of the Wicomb family and the white side
of the Wicomb family. For this reason, I can identify with the Griekwa Psalms. I think we all do,
to a certain extent including the coloured people, the Griekwas, Baster, Nama, and Khoisan.
There is a connection between all of us. The music, the lyrics, and the way we portray ourselves
as coloured people is what lies close to my heart.”
“The Griekwa Psalms, and the way it is portrayed is what attracted me to it,” he said.
He reiterated that his performance of Openbaring is still in its early stages.
“… but I am sure that the Lord put it on my heart for a certain reason and I look forward to
seeing how it will evolve. Openbaring was produced by himself and pastor Tim Feder. We didn’t
know what to expect, it was something new for us, to those listening it is something new, a
horizon that is widened. God has put it in our path and how people would react to it would tell us
whether we are on the right path” he said.
The project was part of a series of their performances in Namibia, they also paid a mission trip
to Swakopmund, Karibib and Windhoek.
“We started in Walvis Bay; I told them that I am from Walvis Bay, and I really want to start here.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to start here, in Walvis Bay… In the past even when Vivian
Molauly and I did something, we always launched it in South Africa and after a few months we
would come to Namibia. This time I felt like starting it here and taking it further…,” he added.
